Lore & Background

Once a marauder of the High Seas during the Great Pirate Invasion, this figure now seeks refuge on solid ground, though his soul remains tethered to the brine. Having survived the relentless assault of swashbucklers and ghostly vessels, he offers his services as a vendor, bartering cannons and maritime curiosities for gold. His presence is a testament to the strange alliances formed in Terraria's chaotic world, where former enemies become neighbors under the same roof. He speaks in riddles of the deep, referencing Davy Jones' locker and the legendary Moby Dick, his mind drifting between the safety of his new home and the vast, treacherous oceans he once commanded.

The Pirate is no mere shopkeeper; he is a living relic of Hardmode's earliest tides. His appearance mirrors the fearsome Pirate Captain he once fought, complete with a tricorn hat and weathered coat, yet his demeanor has softened into gruff hospitality. He harbors a peculiar affection for the Angler, viewing the young fisherman as a potential apprentice to the pirate life, while simultaneously feigning disdain for the Guide's mundane advice. When submerged in Shimmer, he transforms into a spectral ghost, a visual echo of the cursed pirates that haunt the seas, reminding all who see him that death is but another voyage for those who sail the endless horizon.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the eaves of your newly built wooden cottage, carrying the scent of salt and old wood. Inside, a figure sat by the window, polishing a brass telescope with a rag stained by years at sea. He wore a tricorn hat that cast a shadow over eyes that had seen too many storms. "Yarr," he grunted, not looking up as you entered. "Better to have lubbed and lost than never to have lubbed at all, eh?" He laughed, a sound like cracking timber.

You approached the counter where his wares lay: cannons that promised thunderous defense against the coming night. "I'm no landlubber," he muttered, finally meeting your gaze with a glint of mischief. "But even a captain needs a dry dock." Outside, the rain began to fall, drumming against the roof like cannonballs. He stood, adjusting his coat, and watched the storm with a strange longing. "Fish do fly in ye rainy skies," he whispered to himself, as if remembering a world where the laws of nature bent to the will of pirates. In that moment, you realized he was not just selling weapons; he was selling a piece of the sea itself, hoping to keep the ocean's chaos at bay with the safety of your walls.

Reader's Guide

To summon the Pirate, you must first conquer the pirate horde by completing the Pirate Invasion event at least once. This event can be triggered naturally after defeating mechanical bosses or manually using a Pirate Map dropped by enemies in Hardmode oceans. Once the invasion is vanquished and an empty house exists, he will move in.

For optimal happiness, place him near the Angler, Princess, Tavernkeep, or Stylist. He thrives in Ocean biomes but also enjoys Underground, Cavern, and The Underworld environments. Conversely, he despises crowded areas and dislikes the Corruption, Crimson, Dungeon, and being far from home.

The Pirate sells essential Hardmode items including the Cannon, Cannonball, and various decorative pirate-themed furniture. His cannon is a powerful stationary turret that fires both bullets and explosive cannonballs, providing unique defensive capabilities against invasion events. He is crucial for players seeking to fortify their bases with thematic artillery or collect rare sea-faring aesthetics.

Note: While his spawn requires Hardmode progression (via the Pirate Map), he does not strictly require a Hardmode world if summoned via map, though obtaining the map itself usually demands it.
