Old Man
A cursed soul bound to the dungeon's threshold awaits liberation
I hope you have like six friends standing around behind you. — The Old Man The Old Man is an NPC whose primary function is to summon Skeletron , and can be found at the Dungeon 's entrance. When spoken to at night , the Old Man will give the player the option to “ Curse ”, which summons Skeletron. When spoken to during the day, the Old Man will tell the player to return at night. He will also judge players with 300 maximum health (15 hearts) or less, or 10 defense or less as unworthy, but still allows them to summon Skeletron. The Dungeon can be entered without defeating Skeletron, but traveling deeper than ground level within it (below zero depth ) will spawn Dungeon Guardians that will most likely kill the player on contact ( see Guide:Dungeon Guardian strategies ). When Skeletron is defeated, the Old Man is freed from his curse and will arrive as the Clothier (as long as a vacant house is available), in addition to allowing access to the Dungeon. - Internal NPC ID : 37 - 1 Shimmered form - 2 Notes - 3 Quotes - 4 Trivia - 5 History - 6 References

Lore & Background
At the jagged mouth of the Dungeon stands a figure shrouded in tattered rags, his eyes haunted by an ancient pact. This is the Old Man, a hapless guardian trapped between life and death, serving as the final barrier before the dark depths. By day, he warns travelers of their weakness, judging those with insufficient heart or defense as unworthy to face his master. Yet when the moon rises and shadows lengthen, his true purpose awakens. He offers a choice: return in daylight or accept the curse that summons Skeletron, the skeletal monstrosity that guards the entrance. Legends whisper that he is not merely an NPC but the very vessel of the Dungeon's wardens, his soul bound to the stone until a hero proves strong enough to break the cycle.
The Old Man does not fight. He cannot defend himself against the wilds, nor do enemies harm him, for his existence is suspended in a state of eternal vigilance. He runs from danger but never fights back, a passive observer until the moment of summoning. When the player speaks the words to curse the night, he laughs or pleads, then perishes as Skeletron rises from the earth, their fates intertwined. Should the hero fall, the Old Man returns at dawn, his memory reset, waiting for another brave soul to attempt the trial. Defeating Skeletron shatters the spell, freeing him from his torment and allowing him to take form once more as the Clothier, a quiet tailor who now walks among the living.
In Their Own Story
The wind howls through the cracked archway of the Dungeon, carrying the scent of damp earth and ancient dust. You approach the Old Man, his silhouette trembling against the stone. By day, he speaks in riddles, warning you of your frailty, mocking your small health and weak armor. "You are far too weak," he croaks, eyes darting away from yours. But as twilight bleeds into night, a change overtakes him. His voice shifts from mockery to desperate entreaty. "Please! Battle my captor and free me!" he begs, his hands clasped tight.
You choose the path of the curse. The air grows heavy, the temperature dropping as Skeletron's skeletal form begins to materialize from the darkness. The Old Man falls silent, a look of resignation crossing his face before he vanishes in a flash of light, consumed by the entity he summoned. The battle rages, bones clattering against steel, until finally, the monster crumbles into dust. Silence returns to the entrance. In its place stands a new figure, no longer a ghost of a curse but a living man in fine clothes, ready to serve those who freed him from their eternal watch.
Reader's Guide
To encounter the Old Man, travel to the Dungeon entrance at any time. He resides permanently at this location until Skeletron is defeated. During daylight hours, he will refuse to summon the boss unless you meet specific strength requirements, though he allows weaker players to attempt it anyway. To initiate the fight, speak to him after nightfall (7:30 PM) and select the "Curse" option. This action kills him temporarily but spawns Skeletron.
Upon defeating Skeletron, the Old Man is freed from his curse and respawns as the Clothier NPC, provided a vacant house exists in your world. The Clothier no longer guards the Dungeon; instead, he sells vanity items and dyes, marking your progression into the post-boss era. He has no specific biome happiness preferences like other NPCs but requires standard housing to reside.
Crucially, you can enter the Dungeon before defeating Skeletron, but venturing below ground level (below 0 depth) will summon a Dungeon Guardian that kills instantly. Defeating Skeletron is mandatory for safe exploration of the Dungeon's depths and unlocking its treasures. The Old Man cannot be housed or moved; he is bound to his post until the curse is broken.
