Lore & Background
To the untrained eye, she is merely a vendor selling spools of wire and strange actuators, but to the architect of empires, she is the key to life itself. She speaks in riddles about plugged-in devices and blinking lights, her words echoing with the frantic energy of someone who has seen too many traps fail due to poor planning. Her heart beats faster at the thought of the Goblin Tinkerer, a shared longing that transcends their respective prisons, binding them in a silent dance of engineering romance. From the cold efficiency of Snow biomes to the chaotic underbelly of the Underworld, she seeks only to make sense of the chaos, turning simple switches into symphonies of automation.
In Their Own Story
The air in the Cavern layer tasted of dust and old magic as you descended past the threshold where Skeletron had once held sway. The skeletal guardians stood silent now, their threat neutralized, but the darkness remained absolute until a faint, rhythmic clinking caught your ear. There, amidst the ruin of a forgotten stone archway, sat a figure bound by invisible chains, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and hope. You approached slowly, raising your hand not in combat but in offering. The moment you interacted, the magical bonds shattered like glass, and she scrambled to her feet, clutching a heavy wrench to her chest.
"Thanks! It was just a matter of time before I ended up like the rest of the skeletons down here," she breathed, her voice trembling with relief. She looked at your tools, then at the shadows around you, and suddenly her demeanor shifted from victim to master. "Did you make sure your device was plugged in?" she asked, a crooked smile breaking through her fear as she held out her hand. In that instant, the dungeon ceased to be a tomb of bones and became a workshop waiting to happen. She spoke of wires and circuits with a fervor that lit up the gloom, promising that with her help, even this deep dark could hum with life.
Reader's Guide
To summon the Mechanic into your world, you must first defeat Skeletron, as she only appears in the Dungeon at Cavern layer depth or lower. Once the Old Man is vanquished, explore the deeper corridors where she can be found bound and helpless. Interact with her to free her; if killed before rescue, she will still respawn later provided a vacant house exists.
Her happiness is tied to specific biomes and neighbors. She thrives in the Snow biome, where machines do not overheat, and avoids the Underground or Cavern layers due to traumatic associations. For maximum profit and mood, place her near the Goblin Tinkerer, the Princess, or the Cyborg. Conversely, keep her away from the Arms Dealer and Clothier.
The Mechanic is essential for advanced construction, selling Wire, Actuators, various mechanisms, Wire Cutters, and Wrenches. These items allow you to build complex traps, automated farms, and multi-block switches. Without her, your world remains static; with her, every button can trigger a cascade of mechanical wonders.
