Lore & Background

Deep beneath the surface, where the stone grows cold and the air tastes of copper, lies a goblin outcast bound by his own kin. While most of his kind are content with simple raids and crude weapons, this one dared to dream of rockets and running boots that defy gravity itself. His genius was too sharp for the Goblin Army's blunt logic, leading to his betrayal and abandonment in the caverns. Now known as the Bound Goblin, he waits for a hero brave enough to free him from his ropes, offering not just gratitude but the secrets of reforging destiny itself.

He is a creature of paradox, tossing spiky balls with a nervous hand while speaking of duct tape and silver. His mind races faster than his feet can pace the dark tunnels, constantly tinkering with ideas that could either save a kingdom or explode in its face. He finds kinship with other outcasts, particularly the Mechanic, whispering questions about her welfare between his muttered inventions. In the dim light of the underworld or the cool depths of the caverns, he thrives, surrounded by those who understand the value of a well-made tool over a well-timed war cry.

To the uninitiated, he is merely a vendor, but to the wise, he is the architect of potential. He does not simply sell items; he reshapes them, rolling the dice on modifiers with a cost that reflects his mood and your fortune. His presence marks a turning point in any adventurer's journey, transforming raw gear into legendary artifacts through the gamble of the reforging table. He is the bridge between the mundane and the miraculous, proving that even among goblins, some are indeed rocket scientists.

In Their Own Story

The pickaxe struck stone with a rhythmic clang, echoing through the silent Cavern layer until it hit something softer than rock. You brushed away the dust to reveal not ore, but ropes, and behind them, wide, terrified eyes framed by battered goggles. He was small, huddled against the cold earth, his green skin pale in the torchlight. "Thank you for freeing me, human," he stammered, rubbing his wrists where the bindings had been. "I was tied up and left here by the other goblins. You could say we didn't get along very well."

He scrambled to his feet, clutching a small bag of spiky balls as if they were precious gems rather than weapons. "Now that I'm an outcast, can I throw away these spiked balls? My pockets hurt," he muttered, looking around nervously before fixing you with a sudden, intense stare. "Looking for a gadgets expert? I'm your goblin!" He gestured wildly to the darkness behind him. "I thought you'd be taller, but never mind that. Do you know why we all carry these things? Because I don't." He paused, then grinned with a manic energy. "Yo, I heard you like rockets and running boots, so I put some rockets in your running boots."

As he began to pace the narrow tunnel, muttering about motors and hats, the weight of his invention seemed to lift from your shoulders. Here was the key to turning your battered armor into a godslayer, hidden away in the dirt by those who feared what he could build. You nodded, accepting his offer, and watched as the bound goblin transformed from a victim of his race into the master of your fate.

Reader's Guide

To unlock the Goblin Tinkerer, you must first defeat a Goblin Army invasion. Once defeated, venture into the Cavern layer (or Underground in Remix seeds) to find the Bound Goblin caged by ropes. He spawns rarely near players exploring these depths, so searching every tunnel is unnecessary; use a Hunter Potion to make him glow for easier detection, or check the expansive Dungeon and Jungle Temple where bound NPCs often appear. Interact with him to free him, after which he will move into your first available vacant house.

The Tinkerer provides two essential services: selling unique items like the Rocket Boots and offering the Reforge function. This mechanic allows you to randomize the modifier of weapons and accessories, potentially boosting stats significantly at the cost of one-third of the item's value. To minimize this cost, maximize his happiness by housing him in the Underground, Cavern, or The Underworld biome alongside liked neighbors such as the Mechanic and Dye Trader. Equipping a Discount Card or Greedy Ring further reduces reforge costs.

His combat utility is passive but present; he defends himself with Spiky Balls dealing 15 to 26 damage depending on progression. While his happiness affects prices, his physical survival does not stop you from finding him again if killed, as he will respawn after some time provided a house remains available. He is vital for end-game optimization, turning average gear into legendary tools through strategic reforging.
