Clothier
The cursed guardian of the Dungeon rises anew as a tailor of vanity
Thanks again for freeing me from my curse. Felt like something jumped up and bit me. — The Clothier The Clothier is an NPC vendor who mainly sells vanity items . He will move in once the following criteria have been met: He is the same character as the Old Man who guards the Dungeon before Skeletron is defeated. After defeating Skeletron, the Old Man is freed from his curse, and he disappears from the Dungeon's entrance. His clothes are no longer tattered, his eyes have turned from red to blue, and he is wearing a Red Hat and scarf. Equipping the Clothier Voodoo Doll allows the player to attack and kill the Clothier (similar to the Guide Voodoo Doll ) with any damage-inflicting item. Doing so at night resummons Skeletron, but killing the Clothier without the Clothier Voodoo Doll equipped (such as by using the Flymeal on its own) will not summon the boss. The Clothier will defend himself against nearby enemies by firing shadowflame skull projectiles that damage and inflict the Shadowflame debuff on enemies for 5–10 seconds. He deals 16 / 24 / 28 damage at the start of the game, and gains various stat boosts as the player progresses. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Red Hat 100% - Skull - Internal NPC ID : 54 - Internal Projectile ID : 585 - There is an available vacant house . - Skeletron has been defeated. - 1 Items sold - 2 Living preferences - 3 Shimmered form - 4 Tips - 5 Names - 6 Quotes 6.1 Interaction quotes - 6.2 Happiness quotes - 7 Trivia - 8 History - 9 References

Lore & Background
Before the first stone of the Dungeon was laid in earnest, an old man stood vigil at its entrance, his spirit bound by a malevolent curse that twisted his very soul. For eons he wandered the threshold, tattered and red-eyed, forced to guard the secrets within until a brave adventurer summoned Skeletron and shattered the enchantment. In that moment of victory, the old man was cleansed; his eyes shifted from blood-red to a calm blue, his rags transformed into a pristine Red Hat and scarf, and he became the Clothier. He carries the weight of forgotten sins, occasionally whispering of a dungeon where he once bound a woman, yet now finds solace in the art of tailoring and the simple joy of selling hats.
Though he appears as a humble merchant, the spirit of his former torment lingers in his shadowflame skull projectiles that defend him against monsters. He speaks of movies from worlds long gone, referencing tales of leather friends and boxes of clothes, hinting at a memory fractured by time and magic. His happiness is found in the deep, dark quiet of the Underground or Caverns, places that echo the solitude he once knew. To the player, he is a gateway to vanity, offering garments that mimic the very boss that freed him, while secretly harboring a connection to Skeletron that can be reawakened with a voodoo doll and a drop of blood under the moon's watchful eye.
In Their Own Story
The air in your new home smells faintly of wool and old dust. You approach the man seated by the window, his red hat casting a shadow over eyes that are no longer filled with the madness of the dungeon. 'Thanks again for freeing me from my curse,' he murmurs, his voice steady but laced with a strange nostalgia. 'Felt like something jumped up and bit me.' He gestures to the rack of hats behind him, his hands moving with the dexterity of one who has stitched through centuries.
You ask about the Dungeon, and for a heartbeat, his expression falters. 'I keep having vague memories of tying up a woman and throwing her in a dungeon,' he admits, shaking his head as if to clear a fog. The shadowflame skulls floating near him flicker with a faint, ghostly light, remnants of the magic that once bound him. He offers you a discount, mentioning a Truffle who might need 'sizing.' Yet, when you mention nightfall and the voodoo doll in your pocket, his smile tightens. The past is not easily buried; it waits in the dark, ready to summon the skeletal king again if provoked.
Reader's Guide
To unlock the Clothier, you must first defeat Skeletron at the Dungeon entrance. Once the Old Man is freed from his curse, he will automatically move into any valid vacant house. He cannot spawn before this boss battle.
The Clothier specializes in vanity items, most notably the Red Hat and various other clothing pieces that allow for extensive character customization. Uniquely, he defends himself against enemies by firing shadowflame skull projectiles that inflict the Shadowflame debuff, dealing damage over time.
His happiness is tied to specific biomes and neighbors. He thrives in the Underground, Cavern, or Underworld biomes, preferring these dark environments over surface locations like The Hallow. For neighbor preferences, he enjoys living near the Truffle, Princess, Tax Collector, Nurse, and Mechanic, but dislikes the Mechanic specifically. Avoid placing him in overcrowded areas or the Dungeon itself to ensure his happiness.
A critical mechanic involves the Clothier Voodoo Doll. If you equip this item and kill the Clothier at night, Skeletron will resummon instantly, allowing for repeat farming of his drops. However, killing him without the doll equipped simply respawns him normally.
