Possessed Hatchet

A legion of spinning steel that hunts the wounded without pause

The Possessed Hatchet is a Hardmode , post- Golem boomerang that has a 1/7 (14.29%) chance of being dropped from Golem . When thrown, it homes in on enemies within 50 tiles and inflicts the Hemorrhage debuff on hit. Unlike most boomerangs, it does not have to return to the player before being fired, with no limit to the number that can be thrown out at one time. With no enemies nearby, it returns to the player after traveling 25 tiles. The Possessed Hatchet can hit up to 10 targets. This is different from most boomerangs, which can hit infinite enemies while returning. Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic . Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. - Possessed Hatchet - Internal Item ID : 1122 - Internal Buff ID : 375 - Internal Projectile ID : 182 - 1 Notes - 2 Tips - 3 History - 4 References

Lore & Background

Forged in the molten heart of the Jungle Temple after the defeat of the Golem, the Possessed Hatchet is no mere tool of war but a manifestation of chaotic spirit. Unlike its kin which must return to the hand before striking again, this weapon defies tradition by releasing an endless army of spectral blades. Each hatchet carries the curse of Hemorrhage, ensuring that once struck, prey bleeds profusely for over ten seconds, their vitality draining away as the steel circles back or seeks fresh meat.

Legends say these weapons are possessed by the restless wills of ancient guardians who refuse to rest even in death. They possess a cruel intelligence, ignoring the wielder's command to return if enemies remain within fifty tiles, instead locking onto the nearest target with unerring precision. Against the writhing forms of giant worms, they display a particular malice, diving straight for the vulnerable tail segments that most other weapons miss, turning the battlefield into a storm of relentless, hunting metal.

In Their Own Story

The air in the temple grew heavy as you loosed the first hatchet. It spun away with a high-pitched whine, vanishing into the gloom before curving back to strike a lurking ambush. But instead of clattering uselessly at your feet, it hovered, its edge still humming. You threw another, and another, until a dozen spinning discs filled the cavern, a chaotic constellation of death orbiting your desperate struggle.

A Crawltipede erupted from the stone floor, its many legs churning the dust. The hatchets did not hesitate. They ignored the armored head, diving with supernatural grace to sever the glowing tail segments in rapid succession. Blood sprayed as the Hemorrhage curse took hold, and your enemy writhed in agony while you stood safe amidst the storm of returning steel. Even as your health faltered and darkness claimed you, one final hatchet hung suspended in the air, waiting with patient malice for your spirit to return.

Reader's Guide

To obtain the Possessed Hatchet, you must defeat the Golem within the Jungle Temple's final chamber. This Hardmode boss has a specific drop rate of 1/7 (approximately 14.29%) for this weapon, making it a reliable, albeit luck-dependent, reward for your conquest.

This boomerang is a powerhouse for Melee builds that favor high mobility and crowd control over heavy armor. Its unique mechanic allows you to spam throws without waiting for the projectile to return, creating a wall of damage that can hit up to ten targets simultaneously. The weapon excels when fighting swarms or bosses with multiple segments, as it automatically homes in on enemies within 50 tiles.

For maximum efficiency, prioritize the Godly or Demonic modifiers, both of which provide identical average damage boosts due to the weapon's specific stat scaling. Utilize its unique behavior against worm-type enemies like Crawltipedes, where it consistently targets their tails for critical damage. Remember that if you fall in battle while airborne hatchets are active, they will hover at your death location and return once you respawn, allowing for a tactical reset.
