Solar Eruption

A whipsword forged from the fury of a dying sun

The Solar Eruption is a Hardmode , post- Lunatic Cultist melee weapon that swings a long whipsword from the player's position towards the cursor. The whipsword sweeps in a narrow arc of varying length before quickly retracting. It can pass through blocks and pierce infinitely. The whipsword creates a Solar Explosion upon hit, dealing damage and inflicting the Daybroken debuff for 5 seconds, which deals 100 damage per second. Its best modifier is Ruthless . Since part of the Solar Eruption's damage output comes from the Solar Explosions which cannot critically hit , critical hit chance bonuses are less effective than direct increase in damage. - Solar Eruption - Solar Explosion - Internal Item ID : 3473 - Internal Buff ID : 189 - Internal Projectile ID : 611, 612 - 1 Crafting 1.1 Recipes - 2 Notes - 3 Tips - 4 Trivia - 5 History - 6 References

Lore & Background

Forged in the final breath of the Celestial Pillars, this blade is not merely steel but solidified solar fury. It emerges from the Lunar Fragments gathered after the fall of the Cultist, carrying the scorching essence of a star forced into physical form. When wielded, it does not simply cut; it erupts. The whipsword extends toward the cursor like a plasma prominence, carving an ellipse through stone and flesh alike before retracting in a flash of incandescent light. Its shaft bristles with eighteen pairs of spikes that catch the air as it swings, mimicking the jagged edges of a solar flare.

The Daybroken debuff marks those struck by its tip, leaving them incinerated by solar rays that continue to burn long after the initial slash. This lingering fire is the weapon's true power, ensuring that even a graze leaves a target vulnerable to further destruction. Unlike other blades that rely on precision, this weapon thrives on chaos, sweeping through walls and enemies with equal indifference. It is a tool of total annihilation, designed to purge the world of darkness by burning away everything in its path. The tip resembles ancient Drakanian spears, hinting at forgotten cosmic wars where such weapons were used to cage the stars themselves.

In Their Own Story

You stand before the obsidian wall, knowing the beast hides within the stone. There is no need to break the barrier; there is only the swing. Your arm moves with a rhythm older than time, summoning the Solar Eruption from your grip. A ribbon of white-hot plasma arcs outward, ignoring the rock as if it were mist. The whipsword stretches thirty-three tiles deep, its tip finding the shadowed form behind the cover.

Impact. A solar explosion blooms inside the wall, silent but devastating. The enemy writhes under the Daybroken curse, their skin glowing with internal fire. You swing again, and again, the weapon retracting with a hiss before snapping forward once more. Each strike leaves invincibility frames that dance between the blade and the blast, a chaotic rhythm of destruction. They cannot hide in the earth, for the sun sees all. With every arc, you feel the heat radiating against your armor, a reminder that you hold the fury of a star in your hand, ready to burn the world clean one swipe at a time.

Reader's Guide

Craft this weapon at an Ancient Manipulator using eighteen Solar Fragments dropped by the Celestial Pillars. It is a post-Lunatic Cultist melee item requiring high mobility to manage its short effective range and random arc width. The best modifier is Ruthless, as critical hit chance bonuses are less effective since the Solar Explosions cannot deal critical damage.

Maximize damage by understanding the timing. Each swing lasts 0.5 seconds, with invincibility frames preventing immediate re-damage every 8 ticks. This limits DPS but ensures consistent application of the Daybroken debuff. Use it against groups like Celestial Pillars or Moon Leech Clots where infinite pierce and wall penetration shine. While the Daybreak offers better range for single targets, Solar Eruption excels in confined spaces or against enemies hiding behind cover.

Equip flasks to boost the whipsword's debuff potential, though explosions ignore these bonuses. Be wary of the danger; the narrow arc can leave you exposed if you miss. Master the ellipse swing and position yourself so the tip reaches the target on the 16th tick for maximum reach.
