Rain

The sky weeps upon the surface world, birthing strange creatures and hidden treasures

I hope it doesn't rain again until this paint dries. That would be a disaster! — The Painter Rain is an event that occurs randomly and affects all surface biomes for its duration. It can last anywhere between 8 minutes and 61 minutes 30 seconds (potentially spanning both day and night portions); the average duration is 19 minutes 50.23 seconds. When a player is in a Snow biome during Rain, it appears as a Blizzard , causing snowfall volume to increase. Additionally, a special visual effect is displayed during Blizzards. Rain is primarily an aesthetic effect, only visible on the surface : It displays Rain/Blizzard graphics, darkened ambient sun/moon light, increased cloud cover, and altered music . There are, however, some functional effects. The event spawns variants of some regular enemies, but also a few unique enemies , and certain critters behave differently. Some comical effects include Zombies wearing raincoats , slimes carrying umbrellas , and Goldfish walking upright on land, using their tail fins to casually shuffle about (swimming Goldfish will exit water and walk, and walking Goldfish will also spawn on land). Rain has three different variations; Light Rain , regular Rain , and Heavy Rain . The heavier the rainfall, the dimmer the sunlight will be, with Heavy Rain causing noticeable darkness. These variations are only graphical, can be detected with a Weather Radio , and can change multiple times throughout a single downpour. If a Windy Day occurs at the same time as regular or Heavy Rain, it will result in a Thunderstorm . Rain does not produce new water tiles, nor does it cause existing water levels to rise, and it has no effect on lava or honey tiles. Other effects include the following: - There is a +20% Fishing Power bonus in all liquid bodies during Rai

Lore & Background

When the heavens open in Terraria, the world below transforms into a realm of shifting shadows and surreal life. The rain is not merely water falling from the clouds; it is a capricious spirit that darkens the sun and moon alike, casting the surface biomes in an eternal twilight. During these downpours, the boundary between the mundane and the magical blurs. Goldfish defy gravity to shuffle across dry land on their tails, while slimes don makeshift umbrellas and zombies don raincoats as if preparing for a parade in the deluge. In the frozen north, this event escalates into a violent blizzard, howling winds obscuring vision with swirling snow.

This atmospheric shift is governed by unseen forces, occurring randomly yet with a rhythm that seasoned adventurers learn to anticipate. The intensity varies from a gentle drizzle to a heavy downpour that chokes out the light, often accompanied by thunder if wind spirits join the fray. Beneath the gloom, ancient and peculiar entities stir. The Rainbow Slime glows with iridescent fury in the Hallow, while the Ice Golem emerges from the blizzard's heart. Even the legendary Deerclops, a beast of frost and hunger, awakens under the cover of night during these wet storms, seeking to test the resolve of those who dare to stand against the storm.

In Their Own Story

You step out onto the wooden platform just as the first heavy drops begin to fall, turning the bright afternoon into a gray wash. The familiar chirps of birds are silenced, replaced by the rhythmic drumming on leaves and the low rumble of distant thunder. You pull your hood up, watching as a Goldfish hops clumsily from a nearby pond, its fins acting as tiny legs to shuffle across the grass. It is a strange sight, but you have no time to marvel. A shadow detaches itself from the treeline—a Zombie, clad in a slick raincoat that drips with condensation, eyes glowing with malice despite the weather.

The wind picks up, turning the drizzle into a horizontal sheet of water. You draw your sword as the ground trembles. From the blizzard in the distance, a massive silhouette emerges: Deerclops, its single eye scanning the storm for prey. The air crackles with static, and an Angry Nimbus floats overhead, raining lightning bolts that sizzle against the wet earth. You brace yourself, knowing this is not just weather but a trial. The rain washes over you, cold and relentless, yet within this chaos lies opportunity. A Rainbow Slime bounces nearby, shimmering like a living prism, offering a prize for those brave enough to face the storm's fury.

Reader's Guide

Rain occurs randomly on the surface with no manual trigger in Classic modes, though Journey Mode allows control via the Power Menu. The event lasts between 8 and over 61 minutes, shifting through Light, Regular, and Heavy intensities which affect visibility but not water levels.

During Rain, unique enemies spawn including Umbrella Slimes, Flying Fish, and Raincoat Zombies at night. A Blizzard occurs in Snow biomes, spawning Ice Golems. The most significant threat is Deerclops, who spawns at night before being defeated for the first time. Rainbow Slimes appear rarely in the Hallow.

Prepare an arena with platforms to navigate flying threats like Flying Fish and Angry Nimbuses. Use ranged or magic weapons to keep distance from melee attackers. Since Rain boosts Fishing Power by 20%, it is the ideal time to fish for rare items. Kill Ladybugs carefully, as this increases Rain chance temporarily; avoid them if you wish to prevent an event.

Prioritize defeating Deerclops for his Treasure Bag (Expert), Mask, and Trophy. Collect the Nimbus Rod from Angry Nimbuses, Rainbow Bricks from the Hallow, and Ice Feathers from Ice Golems. The event also yields the Rain Coat, Umbrella Hat, and various music discs like 'Rain' and 'Morning Rain'.
