Martian Madness
When red lights flash in the void, ancient machines descend to conquer
I saw some flashing lights, high up in the sky and far away. The truth is out there, I'm telling you. — The Guide Martian Madness is a Hardmode , post- Golem invasion event that causes unique alien-themed enemies to spawn in place of regular enemies. Martian Madness is triggered by a Martian Probe , which spawns randomly in the two outer lateral thirds of the world (with a higher spawn chance in the Space layer). When the Martian Probe detects a player (as indicated with its lights turning red), it immediately attempts to fly away to escape. Attacking a Martian Probe does not cause it to detect a player. The event starts if the Martian Probe successfully escapes. After the event is intitiated, the status message " Martians are invading! " is displayed, and UFOs start flying in the background (as seen in the banner above). However, event enemies can only be spawned near the world spawn point , or near town NPCs . See Notes for details. The Martian Madness is completed after killing enough enemies from it. A progress bar will be displayed to show the progression of the event. - 1 Summoning - 2 Completing - 3 Contents - 4 Notes - 5 Achievements - 6 Tips - 7 Trivia - 8 History - 9 References
Lore & Background
It began with a whisper from the Guide, a tale of flashing lights far above the clouds. In the silent expanse of Space, where stars burn cold and distant, a lone Martian Probe drifted through the ether. It was not an invasion born of malice alone, but of cold calculation. The probe sought to detect life, its sensors sweeping the world below until it found a player with enough vitality to warrant attention. Once detected, the red glare of its eyes signaled a fate sealed: escape and summon the fleet.
The sky turned into a canvas of war as UFOs blotted out the sun, their metallic hulls humming with alien energy. From the void poured legions of mechanical horrors, overriding the natural order of the world. Gray Grunts marched in unison while Scutlix unleashed arcs of lightning that turned flesh to ash. The very air crackled with the sound of laser fire as the Martian Saucer descended, a behemoth of destruction capable of leveling entire towns. This was not merely an event; it was a test of survival against a civilization that viewed Terraria as nothing more than a resource to be harvested.
Yet, amidst the chaos, humanity found its resolve. The Dye Trader offered strange colors born from alien flora, and merchants sold tales of distant stars in their paintings. The invasion left behind not just ruin, but treasures of immense power. Influx Wavers hummed with cosmic energy, and Xenopoppers fired bullets that defied gravity itself. Those who survived the Martian Madness returned changed, bearing scars and secrets from a war fought against the sky.
In Their Own Story
You stand atop your floating island, the wind whipping cold against your armor. The Guide's warning echoes in your mind: 'I saw some flashing lights.' Suddenly, a red beam pierces the twilight, locking onto you. Your heart hammers as the probe turns and flees, vanishing into the upper atmosphere. Within moments, the sky darkens. The familiar chirp of crickets is replaced by the mechanical whine of engines.
UFOs swarm the horizon, their silhouettes blocking out the moon. A Martian Walker stomps through your garden, crushing stone and wood alike as it advances. You draw your weapon, but before you can strike, a Scutlix leaps from the shadows, its electric tendrils arcing toward your allies. Panic sets in as the ground trembles beneath the weight of the Saucer descending from the clouds. Lasers carve craters into the earth, and the air smells of ozone and burnt metal. You realize too late that this is not a battle you can win with force alone; it is a dance of survival. As the progress bar fills in your vision, you watch your town burn, knowing that only by enduring the storm can you claim the treasures hidden within the wreckage.
Reader's Guide
The Martian Madness triggers when a random Martian Probe detects a player with at least 200 health in the outer two-thirds of the world. The probe must successfully escape to initiate the invasion.
Once started, enemies spawn near the world spawn or town NPCs, overriding normal spawns within 187.5 tiles horizontally and 67.5 tiles vertically. Key threats include the Scutlix (lightning), Tesla Turrets (stationary guns), and the massive Martian Saucer, which appears after 30% progress.
Build a flat arena with platforms to avoid ground-based Walker attacks. Use teleporters or portals to skip killing low-value enemies, allowing more Saucers to spawn for better loot. Minions should be dismissed before triggering the probe to avoid accidental kills.
Focus on defeating the Martian Saucer for its exclusive drops: the Influx Waver, Electrosphere Launcher, Cosmic Car Key, and the coveted Brain Scrambler pet. The event ends when the kill count is reached, which scales with player count.
Did You Know?
- Martian enemies bleed purple instead of red when killed.
- The Martian Saucer counts as 10 kills toward the invasion progress.
- Exiting the world just before the probe despawns cancels the event entirely.
- Town NPCs cannot respawn while the Martian Madness is active.
