Shimmer

A celestial pool where matter unravels and rebirths in lavender light

Shimmer is a shiny, lavender-colored, pearlescent liquid . It can be found at any point in the game in the Aether , a mini-biome that generates once per world in the Underground or Cavern layers , and always on the same half of the world as the Jungle . After the Moon Lord has been defeated, it can be obtained limitlessly by using the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket . Shimmer has the unique function of transforming ("transmuting") certain dropped items and entities submerged in it: Items will float upwards after transformation until they leave the liquid, then linger in midair and produce vibrant lights until a player picks them up, similarly to souls . Items that cannot be transformed will follow normal gravity and sink to the bottom of the Shimmer. In addition to its transforming effect, Shimmer also has an effect on other things that enter it: Unlike other liquids, the player cannot fish or use items in Shimmer, nor can it be picked up with an Empty Bucket . Shimmer also does not have a liquid bomb variant. It can still be moved by pumps , however. Upon contact with any other liquid, Shimmer will form Aetherium Blocks . - Most crafted items are transformed back ("decrafted") into their crafting materials. - Certain items are transformed into other items. A few items can only be obtained via this transformation, such as Ambrosia . Some item transformations only work under certain conditions. - The sprite of town NPCs is changed. - Certain enemies are transformed into other enemies. - Most critters are transformed into Faelings . - When a player's head is submerged in the liquid, or the bobber of a player's fishing pole touches the liquid, they will be afflicted with the Shimmering debuff. This causes them to fall slowly while phasing through all blocks until they reach an o

Lore & Background

The Aether appears only once per world, always tethered to the presence of the Jungle, as if seeking a balance between chaos and order. Legends say that before the Moon Lord's fall, this liquid was guarded by the very earth itself, accessible only to those who dared delve into the deepest caverns. Now, it flows freely for the victors, a testament that even the most rigid creations of the forge can be undone. It is a place where the boundaries between creature and spirit blur, turning humble insects into ethereal Faelings and altering the very visage of town dwellers.

In Their Own Story

Venturing deeper, you spot a small bird trapped near the surface. With a gentle nudge, it tumbles into the glow. For a heartbeat, it is invisible, then it emerges not as flesh and feather, but as a winged spirit of light, dancing on the breeze above the pool. You dip your helmet beneath the surface, feeling the world tilt. Gravity releases its hold, and you drift upward through solid rock, a ghost in your own body. The Shimmer does not drown; it reveals what lies hidden within everything.

Reader's Guide

Strategically, Shimmer is essential for late-game optimization. It allows players to retrieve rare materials from crafted items or obtain exclusive drops like Ambrosia that cannot be crafted normally. After defeating the Moon Lord, you can acquire a Bottomless Shimmer Bucket to move the liquid freely. Remember that while most critters become Faelings, statue-spawned creatures and projectiles hitting the sides of the pool will not transmute.
