Debuffs

Shadows that cling to flesh, draining life and warping the very will to fight

Debuffs are negative status effects inflicted on a player, enemy or NPC during combat or through various items or the environment. Active debuffs are shown as icons below the hotbar , along with their remaining duration. Debuffs are almost universally negative or at least malign effects, in contrast with buffs , over which the player has much more control. In general, damaging debuffs will stack: If a target is both Poisoned and On Fire! , they will take damage from both debuffs (see Notes for more details). Death always cancels any active debuffs. Unlike buffs, debuffs cannot be canceled by right-clicking their icons. The Nurse can cancel debuffs at a cost that varies from 75 CC / 1 SC 50 CC to 3 GC / 6 GC per active debuff, depending on some factors (see Nurse § Price increases for more details). This does not apply to Potion Sickness or Cerebral Mindtrick , which cannot be canceled. Stops natural Health regeneration of the players (items like the Band of Regeneration or the set bonus of the Palladium armor bypass this effect, as they provide additional regeneration instead of boosting natural regeneration), and deals 12 damage per second to enemies and NPCs. Players take 2 damage per second, while enemies and NPCs take 6 DPS. Players take 15 damage per second, while enemies and NPCs take 30 DPS. All entities take 4 damage per second. DPS against players is increased to 50 if Vampirism seed is enabled. Players take 4 damage per second, while enemies and NPCs take 15 DPS. Players take 12 damage per second, while enemies and NPCs take 24 DPS and receive 10% extra knockback. All entities take 8 damage per second. Players take 8 damage per second, while enemies and NPCs take 25 DPS. Reduces 15 defense from afflicted players, and adds 15 Armor Penetration against afflicted

Lore & Background

The mechanics of this suffering are as varied as they are cruel. Some merely whisper of pain, draining vitality at a slow, steady pace, while others scream with violence, halving defenses or turning left into right until hope itself is lost to confusion. In the hands of a master, these curses become tools; the midas touch turns enemies into coin-laden corpses, and ichor pierces armor like water through paper. Yet death remains the only true cure for the afflicted soul, as the final breath wipes the slate clean, erasing every lingering shadow that clung to the living.

In Their Own Story

The air in the cavern grew thick with the scent of sulfur and rot. You felt it before you saw it—a searing heat crawling up your arm as the On Fire! icon flickered into existence below your hotbar. Then came the chill, a frost that did not freeze but instead slowed your blood, marking you with Chilled. Your instincts screamed to leap left, yet your body obeyed the twisted command of Confused, launching you violently toward the wall. The world spun; up became down, and the safety of your sword felt light as paper, halved by Broken Armor.

You tried to drink a potion, but Silenced closed your throat against the magic. Every step was a struggle, movement divided by three, gravity pulling with unnatural weight. Then, the final blow struck: Darkness swallowed the screen, and for a heartbeat, you were blind to the monster's approach. The damage numbers did not stack visually, yet you felt the combined bite of every curse tearing into your flesh faster than time itself could measure. You fell, not from height, but from the sheer weight of the world's malice, until the darkness took you completely.

Reader's Guide

Debuffs are negative status effects that halt natural health regeneration and inflict damage over time on players, enemies, or NPCs. Unlike buffs, they cannot be removed by right-clicking; only a Nurse can cure them for a variable cost, though Potion Sickness and Cerebral Mindtrick remain incurable. Damage-dealing debuffs stack additively in terms of total DPS, but the game displays only the damage number of the strongest effect while accelerating the tick rate to account for all active curses.

Understanding these mechanics is vital for progression, as many late-game items and strategies rely on applying specific stacks or exploiting enemy vulnerabilities. For instance, Daybreak can stack up to eight times for a devastating 800 DPS, while Ichor reduces defense significantly. Players must note that Expert and Master modes double or increase the duration of most debuffs by 150%, making preparation with accessories like the Ankh Shield crucial.

A common oversight is the behavior of multi-tiered damage effects. While you see only one damage number, multiple DoT effects tick simultaneously at a faster rate to ensure their combined DPS is dealt accurately. Additionally, certain seeds like Vampirism or World Is Infected drastically alter debuff potency, turning standard hazards into lethal threats that can decimate unprepared adventurers.
