Pylons

Ancient crystal nodes bind the world in a shimmering web of instant travel

Pylons are placeable furniture items that appear as a large crystal hovering and rotating above a biome -themed stand. With two or more pylons placed in the world, the player can teleport from one pylon to another one. The system they form is referred to as the Pylon Network . When the player is near a pylon, they can teleport to another pylon by doing any of the following: The following conditions must be met by both the pylon near the player and the target pylon (with the exception of the Universal Pylon ): Moreover, the following restrictions apply to all pylons (including the Universal Pylon): - Internal Item ID : 4875, 4876, 4916–4921, 4951, 5652, 5653 - Internal Tile ID : 597 - Pressing ⚷ Open / Activate on the pylon, which opens the full-screen map , and selecting another pylon on the map. - Pressing Toggle Full Map to open the full-screen map, and selecting another pylon on the map. - Selecting another pylon on the overlay-mode or portrait-mode minimap . - There must be two or more housed NPCs (including the Old Man and town pets ) within a rectangular area of 169×124 tiles centered on each of the two pylons. More precisely, the home tile of the NPC ( Dungeon point in the case of the Old Man) must be within this rectangle, and the NPC must be less than 100 tiles away from their home tile. - The pylons must be placed in their respective biome. - Only one of each type of pylon may be placed in a world. - Pylons can only function when the minimap is enabled in the settings . - The player must be within 60 tiles of a pylon to use it. - 1 Types - 2 Crafting 2.1 Shimmer transmutation - 3 Status messages - 4 Notes - 5 Tips - 6 Trivia - 7 History - 8 References

Lore & Background

The Universal Pylon stands apart from this ancient order, a gift earned only after the ultimate cosmic threat has been vanquished and every creature of this world cataloged in the Bestiary. It requires no specific biome, for it carries the essence of all places within its prism. Yet even this supreme artifact obeys the sacred law of connection: without the warmth of nearby inhabitants to anchor it, it remains a dormant stone. The pylons are a testament that in Terraria, movement is not just about speed, but about the bonds that hold society together across vast and dangerous distances.

In Their Own Story

You stand at the edge of the Jungle, the humid air thick with the scent of rain and decay. Before you, a massive crystal hovers above a wooden stand, pulsing with a soft emerald light. You press the activation key, and the world dissolves into a starry expanse. The map unfolds like a living parchment, dotted with glowing beacons representing your friends scattered across the realm. Your finger hovers over the distant snow-capped peak where the Snow Pylon waits. With a thought, you step forward. There is no travel time, only a sudden shift in temperature as frost bites your skin moments after leaving the jungle heat.

You arrive instantly at the foot of an icy mountain, the wind howling through the pass. Nearby, the Clothier and the Zoologist chatter by their homes, their presence the invisible thread that made this leap possible. Without them, you would be stranded in the snow, forced to trek for hours. But here, the network holds strong. You look back at the crystal, now glowing with a faint blue hue, a silent guardian of your journey. It is not magic as the wizards know it, but something older, a geometric promise that no distance can truly separate those who build a home together.

Reader's Guide

The Pylon Network allows instantaneous travel between two or more placed crystals, provided specific conditions are met. To activate a teleport, stand within 60 tiles of a pylon and open the full-screen map to select your destination. Both the source and target pylons must be situated in their matching biomes, such as placing the Forest Pylon only in forest areas.

Crucially, the system requires social infrastructure: at least two NPCs (including pets or the Old Man) must have their homes within a 169x124 tile rectangle centered on each pylon. If this condition is not met, the pylon will refuse to activate. Additionally, you may only place one of each specific biome type per world, and the Universal Pylon requires a completed Bestiary to obtain.

Most players miss that pylons can be purchased from vendor NPCs in any valid biome if two other NPCs are nearby, even if the vendor is not in that biome. The Forest and Cavern pylons are mutually exclusive, appearing only when no other specific biomes are present. In Remix worlds, placement rules shift significantly, banning pylons from the Underworld or central world regions. Finally, remember that the flying crystal itself cannot be painted, though its base stand can be customized to match your decor.
