Layers
Five vertical realms define the world's soul from starlit void to burning deep
A world in Terraria is divided into five layers , each appearing at different depths, or elevations. Each layer has its own characteristics, and most layers contain multiple biomes . Depth can be determined via a Depth Meter or any of its derivative accessories: The Depth Meter numbers feet or meters above Level Surface, then feet or meters below Level Surface. Each reading includes a layer name: Space, Surface, Level Surface, Underground, Caverns, and Underworld. The range of numbers depends on platform, world size , and the randomized world generation of each world. - On the Desktop version , Console version , and Mobile version , depth is measured in feet, with one tile equaling two feet. - On the Old-gen console version , depth is measured in meters, with two tiles equaling one meter. - On the Nintendo 3DS version , depth cannot be measured, as informational tools are not available. - 1 Space - 2 Surface - 3 Underground - 4 Cavern - 5 Underworld - 6 Trivia
Lore & Background
The world of Terraria is not merely a flat expanse but a towering stratification of reality, where each descent reveals a new face of creation. Above all hangs Space, an eternal midnight realm where gravity loosens its grip and celestial bodies drift against a perpetual black canvas. Here, the air is thin enough to let a leap carry one toward the stars, yet treacherous with the shadowed wings of Harpies and the serpentine coils of Wyverns that guard the void between worlds.
Beneath this airy silence lies the Surface, a vibrant tapestry where life thrives in all its biomes. It is here that grass spreads its verdant fingers and thorny bushes rise to defend the Corruption or Crimson. As one digs past the Level Surface marker, the world darkens into the Underground, a realm of dirt and stone where familiar biomes echo in subterranean silence. Further down, the Cavern layer swells with vast emptiness, hosting icy chasms, glowing mushroom forests, and the jagged veins of lava that mark the transition to the abyss.
At the world's heart burns the Underworld, a realm of open space and magma pillars where water evaporates instantly into steam. This is the final layer, a domain of fire and shadow where the deepest secrets of the earth are kept. To traverse these layers is to journey through the very anatomy of the planet, each depth holding its own dangers and wonders for those brave enough to descend.
In Their Own Story
You stand on the edge of a Floating Island, looking down into the infinite black. The Depth Meter in your hand hums softly, reading 'Space.' You leap, expecting the heavy pull of gravity, but instead, you float upward, your feet barely touching the ground as if walking on clouds. A Harpy shrieks overhead, its talons glinting against the starlight, and you realize this thin air is a battlefield.
Days later, you find yourself deep within the Caverns, the backdrop shifting from dirt to dark stone. The air grows warm, thick with the scent of sulfur as lava pools bubble in the lower reaches. You navigate through an Underground Jungle, vines hanging like curtains, before stumbling upon a massive chasm where the ground gives way entirely. Suddenly, you are falling into the Underworld. The sky is gone, replaced by open space and towering pillars of magma. Water from your canteen sizzles and vanishes the moment it touches the heat. You land on obsidian bridges, surrounded by fire, knowing that only one path remains: forward, into the heart of the world.
Reader's Guide
The Layer system divides every Terraria world into five distinct vertical zones determined by depth. To identify your current location, equip a Depth Meter or its derivatives like the Cell Phone. These tools display the specific layer name—Space, Surface, Underground, Caverns, or Underworld—along with a numerical value in feet (Desktop/Console/Mobile) or meters (Old-gen). Note that on the 3DS version, this data is unavailable.
Understanding layers is crucial for progression and resource gathering. The Space layer features reduced gravity, allowing higher jumps, but spawns dangerous flyers like Wyverns only after Hardmode begins. While Surface biomes allow grass to spread naturally, digging below the 'Level Surface' (0 feet) moves you into the Underground or Caverns even if the terrain looks similar. Distinct biomes like the Underground Jungle or Ice Biome appear exclusively in the Cavern layer.
Most players miss that lava pools are rare in the upper Caverns but common in the lower section, and water evaporates instantly upon entering the Underworld. Always check your Depth Meter before mining for specific ores or hunting rare enemies, as many spawns are strictly tied to these vertical thresholds.
Did You Know?
- On Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, one tile equals two feet of depth measurement.
- The Surface layer is the only place where Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow grass can naturally spread without player intervention.
- Water instantly evaporates when it flows into the Underworld layer due to the intense heat.
- The World Banner in-game artwork depicts the five distinct layers of the world.
