Ranged weapons
From humble slingshots to cosmic star cannons
Ranged weapons are weapons dealing ranged damage that mostly require ammunition to be fired. Ranged weapons are categorized into bows , repeaters , guns , launchers , and consumable weapons . There are several other ranged weapons that do not fit into any of these types; all of these weapons, together with the launchers, are buffed by the Shroomite Helmet and referred to as Specialist Weapons in the code. Due to the usage of ammunition alongside the weapon, the total damage and knockback values in effect during use are actually the sum of the weapon's stats combined with those of the ammunition type used. A ranged weapon with a knockback value of zero, for example, will still usually apply some knockback, since nearly all ammunition types have their own knockback values. There are 112 ranged weapons. The following lists present all ranged weapons, along with their damage and how to obtain them. The weapons are roughly ordered by their intended stage of game progression. - 1 Pre-Hardmode 1.1 Bows - 1.2 Guns - 1.3 Consumables - 1.4 Specialist - 2 Hardmode 2.1 Bows - 2.2 Repeaters - 2.3 Guns - 2.4 Launchers - 2.5 Specialist - 3 Boost gear 3.1 Armor sets - 3.2 Accessories - 3.3 Buffs
Lore & Background
In the fractured realm of Terraria, the Ranged class stands as a testament to humanity's defiance against chaos through precision and engineering. Where others rely on brute force or arcane sorcery, the Ranger wields tools that turn simple projectiles into instruments of war. These weapons, categorized by their mechanical hearts—bows drawn taut with tension, repeaters cycling with rhythmic violence, and guns roaring with gunpowder—demand a symbiotic relationship with ammunition. The total devastation wrought is not merely the sum of the weapon's steel but the alchemical union of projectile and powder, where even a silent arrow gains its voice through the kinetic fury of the slug it carries.
The evolution of these armaments mirrors the world's descent into deeper darkness. What begins as a wooden bow fletched with simple feathers transforms in Hardmode into repeaters that spit volleys of death or launchers that birth homing rockets from the earth itself. Some weapons defy categorization entirely, firing bubbles, coins, or mechanical piranhas without needing external munitions, branded by the code as Specialist tools. To master them is to understand the delicate balance of supply and destruction, for every shot consumes a resource, making the conservation of bullets and arrows a matter of survival as much as strategy.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the caverns, carrying the scent of wet stone and impending doom. You tightened your grip on the Meteor Handcannon, its cold barrel humming with potential violence. Ahead, a horde of zombie-like creatures shuffled forward, their eyes glowing in the gloom. You did not run; instead, you exhaled slowly, aiming for the center mass. With a thunderous crack, the gun roared, sending a spread of three to five bullets tearing through the air. The impact was visceral, a sum of the weapon's power and the bullet's own kinetic truth.
As the first wave fell, you reached for your belt, swapping the heavy gun for a lighter repeater. The rhythm changed instantly from the slow, deliberate boom of firearms to a staccato chant of destruction. Two or three arrows erupted from the barrel with every pull of the trigger, stitching a line of crimson across the darkness. The creatures surged forward, but you were already moving, your armor granting a fluid grace that turned evasion into an art form. A stray explosion rocked the ground nearby, yet you remained focused, converting your remaining musket balls into high-velocity slugs. In this dance of lead and steel, you were not just a survivor; you were the architect of their end.
Reader's Guide
Early game survival hinges on mastering the Bow. Craft wooden variants immediately, upgrading to Gold or Platinum bows as materials allow. Prioritize the Shadow armor set for its +15% ranged damage bonus, or the Ancient Shadow variant for superior critical strike chance if available. Utilize consumable weapons like Shurikens and Grenades sparingly, remembering they do not benefit from standard ammo conservation items.
Transition to Hardmode by securing a Cobalt or Palladium set. The Cobalt armor offers rapid healing upon striking enemies, vital for sustained combat, while Palladium provides a solid 20% chance to conserve ammo. Acquire the Muskets and the Minishark, noting its extraordinarily low use time allows for blistering fire rates despite high inaccuracy. As you progress through Mythril and Adamantite tiers, focus on maximizing critical strike chances with Orichalcum or Adamantite armor sets.
Endgame mastery requires the Vortex armor set from the Lunar Events, granting a 20% chance to avoid ammo consumption and significant damage boosts. Utilize Specialist weapons like the Piranha Gun or Stynger for unique mechanics that bypass traditional ammo limits. Always pair your loadout with the Ammo Box and Magic Quiver accessories to maximize efficiency. Remember that knockback is calculated by both weapon and projectile; even a zero-knockback gun can push enemies back if paired with high-impact bullets.
