Hardmode

The ancient spirits of light and dark have been released

Hardmode , true to its name, is a more difficult version of the initial world . A world permanently changes into Hardmode after the Wall of Flesh is defeated for the first time, granting players new challenges and much more content to explore. Enabling Hardmode in a world is necessary for game progression, as several new bosses leading up to the game's final boss only become available to fight in this world state. - 1 Biomes 1.1 Conversion - 1.2 Underground Corruption / Crimson - 1.3 Hallow / Underground Hallow - 1.4 Spread - 2 Ores and bars 2.1 Hardmode ores - 2.2 Crates - 2.3 Hallowed Bars - 2.4 Chlorophyte Ore - 2.5 Luminite - 2.6 Mining and crafting - 3 Bosses 3.1 Queen Slime - 3.2 Mechanical bosses - 3.3 Plantera 3.3.1 Post-Plantera - 3.4 Golem - 3.5 Duke Fishron - 3.6 Empress of Light - 3.7 Lunatic Cultist - 3.8 Moon Lord - 4 Enemies - 5 NPCs - 6 Events - 7 Items 7.1 Equipment - 8 Notes - 9 Achievements - 10 Tips 10.1 Difficulty - 10.2 Resources 10.2.1 Money - 11 History - 12 References

Lore & Background

When the Wall of Flesh falls, the world itself shudders and fractures under a new, violent destiny. The ancient spirits of light and dark are unchained, tearing through the earth in two diagonal stripes that stretch from the sky to the depths of the Underworld. One path blooms with the pastel hues of the Hallow, its rainbow skies and puffy trees masking a deadly agility beneath its whimsical facade. The other rots into a deeper Corruption or Crimson, where the evil spreads with terrifying speed, devouring land and driving peaceful NPCs from their homes.

Beneath this transformation lies a treasure trove of forgotten metals waiting to be forged. Cobalt and Palladium emerge first, followed by Mythril and Orichalcum, then the rare Adamantite or Titanium, each layer harder than the last. These ores do not merely sit in the dark; they replace the very fabric of the world, demanding stronger hammers and pickaxes to harvest. The Underground Jungle awakens with Chlorophyte, a living ore that spreads through mud like a green infection, offering power only to those who have tamed the mechanical horrors above.

This era is not merely an increase in difficulty but a fundamental shift in reality. The Hallow and evil biomes wage war on the surface while new bosses rise from the shadows, from the gelatinous Queen Slime to the celestial Moon Lord. It is a time of expansion and peril, where every step forward requires forging weapons from the very bones of the world's new, harsher nature.

In Their Own Story

You stand before the shattered altar, the Pwnhammer heavy in your grip. The air crackles with an unnatural energy as the ground beneath you splits open. A stripe of blinding white light tears through the cavern floor, followed instantly by a vein of sickly purple rot. They race outward in a V-shape, consuming everything in their path. You watch in awe and horror as your familiar underground world is rewritten; green mud turns to glowing Chlorophyte, and stone is replaced by shimmering Cobalt.

You venture deeper, drawn toward the Underground Jungle where the air hums with life. The trees here are no longer silent sentinels but pulsating with a strange, verdant energy. Suddenly, a Unicorn charges from the Hallow, its hooves striking sparks against the new ore-rich floor. It is beautiful, yet its eyes hold a feral madness that belies its fairy-tale appearance. You draw your sword, realizing the world has changed. The gentle rhythm of exploration is gone, replaced by a frantic race against spreading corruption and celestial threats. Somewhere in the distance, gears grind and metal screeches; the Mechanical Bosses are waking up, and the true test of your survival has only just begun.

Reader's Guide

The core strategy of Hardmode revolves around managing world spread while rapidly escalating gear tiers to survive aggressive new enemies. Begin by defeating the Wall of Flesh to trigger the V-shaped conversion of biomes. Immediately craft a Pwnhammer and destroy three Demon or Crimson Altars to spawn your first tier of Hardmode ores: Cobalt or Palladium, then Mythril or Orichalcum, finally Adamantite or Titanium. Do not destroy more than necessary early on to avoid spawning random stone blocks that can corrupt the world.

Focus on acquiring a Drax or Pickaxe Axe using Hallowed Bars and Souls from the three Mechanical Bosses to mine Chlorophyte in the Underground Jungle. Once you have defeated Plantera, the spread of evil biomes slows significantly, allowing you to safely farm resources. Use Hardmode crates for alternative ore sources if mining is difficult. Progression leads to Shroomite or Spectre armor for endgame builds, culminating in Luminite gear from the Moon Lord.

Maintain world purity by quarantining Hallow and evil biomes with 3-block wide trenches lined with non-corruptible blocks like wood or clay. Prioritize mobility items early on, as Hardmode enemies are faster and more resilient. Remember that Queen Slime can be summoned via Gelatin Crystals found in the Underground Hallow for an optional but rewarding challenge before the Mechanical Bosses.
